Not all chest pain is alike. It may be mild and attributed to noncardiac problems, including heartburn or stress. Or it may be much more severe and life threatening, such as when it is due to an aortic dissection (tear in the large artery near the heart).

Because aortic dissections are frequently mistaken for other, less serious conditions, even in hospital emergency departments, it is crucial that people know if they are at risk and how to prevent a tragedy.

Aortic dissection is uncommon but not rare, with approximately 5,000 to 10,000 reported occurrences each year. Although the main symptom is usually severe, tearing or “ripping” pain in the chest or lower back, other symptoms include rapid pulse, sweating, nausea, weak or absent pulse and decreased sensation in the limbs.

Aortic dissections require immediate medical attention, as they can result in massive internal bleeding and death.

People with hypertension, Turner syndrome (a chromosome disorder) and a family history of aortic disease are at high risk for aortic dissection. Additionally, people with Marfan syndrome are at up to 250 times increased risk because of the fragile connective tissue in their aorta. Many people who have Marfan syndrome, however, are not diagnosed and do not know they may suffer an early sudden death due to aortic dissection.

The National Marfan Foundation (NMF) urges those who display outward signs of the disorder-including a tall stature with disproportionately long arms and legs, indented or protruding chest bone, flat feet, long fingers and toes and eye problems-to be evaluated. Medications, surgery and lifestyle adaptations can help prevent a deadly dissection.

Diane Sixsmith, M.D., chair, Emergency Medicine Department, New York Hospital, Queens, advises people who are prone to aortic dissection to take extra precautions.

“Early diagnosis and treatment are key to survival for those who are predisposed to aortic dissection,” she says.

“If you are in a high-risk group, and especially if you have Marfan syndrome, don’t wait for a tragedy to find you. Patients who have regular echocardiograms and who take medicine to slow the heart rate and the pulse do very well, and preventive surgery (before the aorta dissects) has a greater than 98 percent success rate.”

Who knows it might be the last ten pounds you need to lose, either way give your weight loss program a jump start by implementing the advice I have set out below. The advice is well balanced and can be used as long as you want to lose weight and is also great to get you going again if you fall a little behind on your goals.

1. Keep a record of everything you eat and drink. Don?t worry about counting the calories. Simply keep details of what you have eaten and how much you consumed. This little exercise will make you very aware of what you are eating and drinking and how much of it you?ve had. It will then help you to work out a plan for healthy meals and snacks.

2. Eat only half of any pure or added fats you previously ate. This is so simple, half the butter on your bread, half the oil in your frying pan, half the sauce and mayonnaise you normally have, half the butter on you toast and muffins. Get the idea? Anything with fat in, just halve. This is so easy and will have enormous benefits for you.

3. Don?t have treats with sugar in more than three times a week. These treats will include ice cream, chocolate, desserts, pastries, cookies, cakes etc. You know the sort of stuff we are talking about here. Don?t try and cut them out completely as that sets the bar unrealistically too high. Keeping it to three times a week is a good reward for not eating junk food the other four. Drastic is fantastic and then you fail.

4. Be sure to have a low fat source of protein in most of your meals such as chicken, beans, low fat yogurt, fish, and cottage cheese. Eggs, nuts and red meat are fine occasionally but not every day.

5. Every week make sure you have a minimum of one meal that does not include cheese or meat. Instead, eat whole grains, vegetables and beans to increase your fibre content and to help reduce fat.

6. Reduce the fat content in the milk you drink. If you drink whole milk, reduce down to 2% fat. From 2% reduce to 1%. Make a choice to buy only low fat cheese and yogurt. When you buy yogurt make sure it doesn?t have sugar hidden away in it. Manage this change gradually and you will be amazed at how your taste buds will adjust. I used to have three spoons of sugar in my tea. I gave up sugar and now, if sugar is added to my tea accidentally it tastes dreadful.

7. It is highly recommended that you eat at least two to three servings of fruit a day. This can be either for dessert or as a snack. Pick fruit that is in season for freshness and for best nutritional value.

8. Drink plenty of water and use it instead of sodas, juices, milk drinks and alcohol. Try and avoid diet soda as the sweet taste might encourage you to crave sugar. Having some hot water with a slice of lemon can be quite refreshing at times.

9. Eat at least three to five servings of vegetables at lunch and dinner. If you get hungry, have some more, they won?t do you any harm.

10. Slow down the rate at which you eat. This gives the body time to register that you are getting full. This avoids overeating which can occur if you eat quickly. It is also better for your digestion.

11. If you want a great snack try grated carrot. Funny thing is that a grated carrot is more filling than a whole one.

12. Eat whole grains whenever you can. The fibre is great for you and will make you feel fuller. Once again, it is also great for your digestion.

13. Eat foods that make you chew. Foods that need a lot of chewing are usually high in fibre plus you use a few calories moving your jaw up and down. Generally speaking, chewing also makes you feel more satisfied. Try not to drink fruit juice, instead eat the real thing. If you like to make soups make them nice and chunky so you can chew them.

14. Make a plan of your meals and snacks the week before. Make a list of what you need to buy and keep to that list so you won?t be tempted to buy junk food. Be sure to have something to eat before you shop, this helps to stop you being impulsive and buying high calorie food you don?t really need.

15. Turn the TV off when you are eating. Studies have shown that eating and watching TV tends to make people eat more because they aren?t paying attention to their meals and how much they are consuming.

While overweight people are often ridiculed, sometimes it is not simply a matter of choosing to be overweight; sometimes it’s an addictive eating disorder. This is not to say that there aren’t some lazy people who don’t take care of themselves, but there are also people who would love to be healthy and fit, but have an addiction that is every bit as serious and difficult to control as alcohol or tobacco cigarettes.

There are very few people who don’t occasionally enjoy a massive binge. You might try to deny it, but there’s Thanksgiving dinner, the Fourth of July barbecue, Christmas dinner, or any number of special occasions where a lot of food is put in front of you and you eat to your heart’s content. Of course, you remember the feeling of lethargy and discomfort that you get after you do it and limit it to just a few times per year.

When someone has an addictive eating disorder, they can’t control their binging. There is something different going on in their bodies. The signal that tells them when to eat doesn’t quite work, or they simply cannot listen to what their bodies are telling them because their mind is in control. Medically, this is termed “compulsive eating.” When you are a victim of compulsive eating, you are literally compelled to eat more food than you should. Whether you are even conscious of how much you are eating is sometimes questionable, which makes the condition even more serious.

Someone with an addictive eating disorder might fantasize about what he will be eating later on in the day. Whenever he is in sight of food, he finds himself unable to resist eating, and in some cases, he can enter a frenzied state of consumption where he can completely ignore the fact that his body is telling him he’s had enough. The difference between a victim of an addictive eating disorder and a bulimic victim is that the bulimic will purge her body after she’s binged, while someone with an addictive eating disorder will simply binge and not feel guilty and do not purge their bodies.

Scientifically, this addiction happens when an individual metabolizes endorphins abnormally in the brain. Like most addictions, the addictive eating disorder victim will eat not just because he is hungry, but because he is seeking a high that comes from a huge influx of food and blood sugar. Consequently, after riding the roller coaster up, he will come crashing down just as far: his blood sugar levels fall dangerously low after the body has struggled to clear out the unhealthy amount he had, and the serotonin in his brain falls to a minimum, leaving him depressed and anxious. The only way he can feel better is to do the whole thing over again.

Over time, this problem can lead to a number of chronic and life-threatening conditions like hypertension, heart failure, depression, diabetes, insomnia, stroke, arthritis, kidney failure, and more. While it can be easy to just write them off as gluttons, there are people who suffer from an addictive eating disorder, and if you or someone you love is showing signs of being a compulsive eater, seek professional help.

Heart disease is one of the nation’s deadliest killers taking the lives of almost one million Americans each year. Each of us has a different susceptibility to cardiovascular disease. Your fitness level and what you eat plays a major role. Approximately 64 million Americans have cardiovascular disease, and here’s the shocker; as many as 40 percent of those who suffer a heart attack have no symptoms. A heart attack may occur due to heart disease but not always and although it is the leading cause of death it can be prevented. Women usually have fewer heart attacks than men but after menopause women catch up to men in the number of heart attacks experienced.

So, what are the factors that lead to heart disease?

The most commonly recognized risk factors are:

1 Stress

2 Smoking

3 High levels of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol)

4 Low levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol)

5 High Blood-pressure.

6 Obesity

7 Diabetes

8 Destructive form of amino acid called homocysteine

9 Heredity

The heart is the most crucial organ to sustain life and to keep it ticking efficiently, our priority should be to prevent its deterioration. The simplest Mantra for prevention of heart disease is; eat well, exercise and adopt a healthy lifestyle. This has been said countless times before and the simple truth is that those who do follow through with the advice enjoy a much healthier and longer life.

-Profuse sweating.

The first hour is very critical. So, don’t waste time thinking its gas or flatulence. Act immediately and call 911 don’t waste time calling your doctor, he’ll most likely ask you to call 911 anyway. Heart disease can be easily prevented it’s just a matter of implementing a healthier lifestyle.

The term diet is one that many people don?t really care for. It has often been said that is DIE with a T. The problem is that most people have the wrong frame of mind when it comes to diet. They have the perception that it is about giving up all their favorite foods and going hungry. They see it as something they will have to do for a period of time. However, for a diet to really work it has to be a lifestyle change and something you look forward to. It has to be a nutritional diet and part of your daily lifestyle.

One of the biggest reasons why a diet fails is that people restrict the foods they can consume. It seems that the more you are told you can?t have something the more you want it. Therefore you need to not eliminate anything from your diet. Instead you need to make modifications. Do you love chocolate? Make yourself a deal that you can have a small amount of it every evening after you get done exercising. If you don?t work out though you don?t get it!

Be wary of fad diets that restrict what you can eat. You need to have well balanced meals every day. This includes lean meats, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and grains. Doing so will ensure you don?t feel hungry throughout the day. When you restrict foods or skip meals you will tend to binge later on in the day so it really hasn?t been effective for you. It can help if you keep a diary of what you eat as well as how you feel. You will soon notice patterns emerging.

If you have been eating the wrong foods for a very long time you may think it is hopeless. Yet you just need to be dedicated to making some changes that will help you to look and feel much better. Get the entire family involved in menu planning and shopping. That way you will all be on the same page with it. Planning meals means you will be less likely to pick up foods when you are in a hurry that aren?t good for you.

Many restaurants also have some healthy foods on their menu so ask about them. There is no reason why you can?t eat out but still stay within the confines of your diet. If you can completely eliminate the word diet from your vocabulary it is even better. The positive outlook you have when you make the changes is going to be very important when it comes to the success you will have.

If you struggle there are dieticians that can help you with planning delicious meals. Discovering that you can eat right, feel good, lose weight, and have delicious foods can become a reality for you. It will really amaze you how quickly you grow accustomed to this new way of eating. You also won?t feel hungry or feel deprived which means you will be very happy. It is time you start controlling the foods you eat instead of allowing them to control you.
